The significance that the gold chain holds is one of prosperity but also of distrust of large financial institutions and criminal justice system. It is still common practice upon incarceration to confiscate any money that is on a person, freeze their assets, take their car or home, etc. but you cannot take their jewelry (Whatever is on their person). When people of color account for 37% of the US population, yet they represent 67% of the prison population the vogue of gold chains, grills and teeth may always be prevalent and necessary fashion.
